Features & Info
Creative Exposure
Moving beyond the basics, we investigate how changes in exposure can bring out the very best in a scene. Delving a little deeper into camera controls, we learn how intentionally under-exposing or over-exposing can create atmospheric results. We see examples of how shooting a bracketed sequence of images can provide greater choice when at the editing stage.
Advanced Composition
We look at the work of several professional photographers, seeing how a bold and creative compositional approach can produce vibrant, engaging images. We encourage students to experiment with composition, showing how a scene can be photographed in several different ways with a variety of results.
Making the most of your gear
This course delves a little deeper into camera controls. We'll teach you how to control the camera's exposure levels, allowing you to accurately capture scenes in bright light and deep shadow. By understanding exactly how the camera is working, you will be able to interpret a scene and set your camera to capture images to be proud of.
You have turned me into a thinking photographer! It has really helped me improve my photography. You created a really friendly atmosphere to learn in and were very approachable… I have learned so much and would certainly recommend the course to others.

More workshop info
The Intermediate Course continues to build upon skills learned in the Beginners’ Course, enhancing your understanding of the camera functions and giving you greater creative control.
As well as a number of technical skills, you will also learn the art of successful composition, seeing examples of work from a range of professional photographers and seeing how you might translate their compositional ideas into your own work. This section of the course is where we will begin to encourage your creative ideas to flourish.
By the end of the Intermediate Course, you will have an understanding and appreciation of the following photographic techniques:
- Camera Metering Modes. You will learn how the camera reads lights and how it interprets what it sees
- Exposure Control. Knowing how and when to override the camera’s automatic exposure settings will allow you to capture perfectly exposed photographs
- Composition. What makes a “good” photograph? How can you adapt compositional ideas to give your images more impact
- You will leave the course with access to a comprehensive set of notes, covering all of the techniques discussed, which you can refer to in your own time.
- Access to a private, online forum where you can continue discussions with fellow students and upload your images for review and critique.
- A list of web site and resources for further learning.
